Understanding sustainable & organic fashion and environmental awareness has been the newest rage in 2020.
More and more companies as well as large corporations are looking for ways to produce and market their products in a more environmentally friendly way. Smaller fashion groups like House of Sunny, Plastic Freedom or BITE are leading the way and act as pioneers for large companies like Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Tommy Hilfiger.
In order to understand the issue of sustainability, it is important to understand all the different ways in which a clothing company can be sustainable. That way you can choose which one is best for you.
1. Fair fashion
A clothing company that operates according to the principle of fair fashion has the goal of guaranteeing its employees fair pay and supporting their further training and education. This equals fewer conflicts and employees are more satisfied. A fair fashion brand is usually provided with a corresponding certificate. Smaller companies that cannot afford these certificates could also be using fair fashion methods.
Vegan fashion is made from 100% non-animal materials and animals themselves are not involved in the production of the garments at all. This can clear your conscience because you’ll know that no animals had to suffer to produce the fashion item. However, vegan brands often use plastic materials. This again has a greater negative effect on the environment.
As the name suggests, regional products and articles come from regional businesses and reduce a company’s carbon footprint, as long transport routes by ship or plane become no longer necessary. Shopping at a regional fashion brand not only benefits the environment, but also guarantees regional, smaller fashion companies and their employees their monthly salaries. But be careful: Just because the label says “Made in USA” does not mean that all the materials used really came from the US.
Minimalist fashion houses use as few materials and resources as possible during the manufacture of their clothing. This has the advantage that fewer materials will be used. Unfortunately, it can quickly become boring for people who like to reinvent themselves. I suggest trying out different fashion trends, as the diversity in materials often comes up short.
5. Organic cotton
Garments made from organic cotton are particularly good for nature and manufacturers, as pesticides are not part of the production. It is better for the cultivated land and the local farmers, while also protecting wildlife on-site. However, organically grown cotton also needs a lot of water and is often treated with toxic chemicals and colorants.
I’ve been on the sustainable wagon for a while – maybe you can come with me?
