Life has rarely seemed as uncertain and scary as these recent months. Cut off from our friends, and family; so many things have had to be suspended indefinitely.
The nightly ritual of cheering for front line workers was a very necessary and helpful coming together. But where do we put our grief, at a time like this, when we’ve lost a loved one or a beloved pet. The usual comforting wakes, gatherings and funeral are no longer available, making it harder to process our grief and to recover. I have been working with ritual and grief for many years and now I have adapted the tools of my rituals into a beautiful kit with a detailed guide for how to do your own ritual at home.
The Seed and Flame gift set is inspired by the Japanese Jizo tradition and myth. Jizo is a beloved protector of those who are suffering with grief and loss, who dives into the underworld to protect and rescue the hurting.
Each kit, designed by me, contains a handmade Jizo figureen, a handmade candle, a handmade pot, seeds to plant a living memorial and soul food, wish paper, kimono fabric and incense matches. It also contains a friendly and helpful guide to conducting one’s own ritual at home.
My clients come from across the spectrum of society and include all ages and genders. People are grieving death of family and friends, beloved pets, miscarriages, George Floyd, old scars from broken hearts. Jizo takes all pain to his breast and nourishes the suffering and the grieving. Treat yourself or someone you know who is grieving to a beautiful handcrafted kit to let the healing begin.
