Ego is a tricky thing: It is that little voice in our head that will not stop talking. It is also the same thing that keeps us from becoming a better version of ourselves.
However, telling your ego to quit its chatter is quite difficult. Here is how letting go of your ego can make you feel more beautiful and how you can let go of your ego.
What is ego?
We all have it: it is a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance.
Ego fabricates a false version of your identity and reinforces that identity with your subconscious mind and subconscious thought. Some examples of things ego will say are I am the smartest in the world, I’m just not good at math, my hair is difficult to manage, I am not a good friend or partner. You see, ego loves pronouns like I, me, and myself; things that make it easy to associate a certain action, belief, or feeling with your identity.
Why is ego inferior?
Ego is often associated with negative impulses and cravings.
And because we are never satisfied with our current status, ego anesthetizes us with its demands, its fears, and its tricks. This can trap us in an eternal comfort zone where nothing happens or become oblivious to our surroundings. Ego traps cut off our happiness completely and trap us away from being present, open-minded, and letting go.
How can we let go of our ego?
The answer is so simple: Just notice it.
Be aware of that little voice inside your head. Whenever you catch it chattering away, simply notice it and bring your attention back to the present. This way, you can stop ego right in its infancy stage before it sprouts into a part of your identity. Meditation is another great tactic because it allows you to be present and conscious of your body and your mind. I’ve been listening to the channel Calm on YouTube recently and it is one of my favs.
This might be a bit difficult to do at first but with time and practice, silencing your ego will become easier. You see, letting go of your ego is such a simple and subtle shift but letting go of your ego can also make us feel so much more beautiful from the inside out.
